As we reflect on our childhood, growing up on the land that is now home to The Groves housing estate, we are filled with a sense of nostalgia. Life on the farm on 11th Avenue was a blend of hard work, community spirit, and joyous celebrations. One of the highlights of our life was bonfire night on the June long weekend. Each year, all the neighbouring families would come together for a combined bonfire. Everyone would contribute timber, and we would create a huge stack, eagerly anticipating the night’s festivities.

A Close-Knit Community
Living in a small community had its unique charm. We knew all our neighbours and most of the general population of farmers in the area. Our lives were intertwined in many ways, fostering a strong sense of belonging and mutual support. The hub of our community was the general store in Austral, owned by Herbie Starr.
Herbie’s store was more than just a place to buy goods; it was a social centre where we connected with one another. All our purchases were made on account, payable on a monthly basis. Herbie’s dual role as the local postmaster meant that the phone exchange was also located at his store. We still remember our phone number: Austral 264. This small detail encapsulates the simplicity and close-knit nature of our community life.

Journeys to Liverpool
For certain necessities, such as visits to the dentist or doctor, music lessons, or high school, we had to travel to Liverpool. These trips, though infrequent, were significant. We would take the bus into town, and despite the travel time, these journeys added a sense of adventure to our routine lives. They were a reminder of the world beyond our small farming community, broadening our horizons and bringing a touch of the urban experience into our rural existence.

Social Gatherings at the Community Hall
Another cherished aspect of our childhood was the regular gatherings at the community hall on Bringelly Road. This hall was the epicenter of our social life, hosting dances and events that brought the whole community together. These dances were family affairs, where we could relax, socialise, and enjoy each other’s company.
They provided a much-needed break from the daily grind of farm life and strengthened the bonds within our community. The hall was more than just a building; it was a symbol of our unity and shared experiences, a place where memories were made and cherished.
The Beauty and Bounty of Our Farm
Our farm was situated on a hill at the very end of 11th Avenue, offering a beautiful view towards the city. The land was ideal for farming, and my dad grew tomatoes as the main crop. All our neighbours were market gardeners as well, creating a vibrant, agricultural community. We had a cow for our milk supply, as did many other farmers at the time, ensuring we always had fresh milk.
In addition to tomatoes, dad grew a variety of vegetables for our own use. Whatever we couldn’t use, we shared with neighbours and relatives, reinforcing the communal spirit that characterized our lives. We also had fruit trees, and we particularly remember the mulberry trees that produced an abundance of berries, enough to satisfy all the neighbourhood children.

Today, as we walk through The Groves housing estate, we are reminded of the rich history that underpins this modern development. The land has transformed, but the memories of our life on 11th Avenue remain vibrant. The street names and the layout of the estate serve as a bridge between the past and the present, honouring the legacy of the families who once farmed this land.

After nearly three decades with Allam, Ray Debono is ready to hang up his hat and bid farewell to the team. Ray has been the cornerstone of the Allam family, witnessing the company weather countless storms and celebrate triumphs. As we prepare to say our farewells, we can't help but feel a tinge of sadness, knowing Allam won't be the same without him.
In his role as Purchasing Manager, Ray's been the master negotiator, striking deals with suppliers that have been crucial to Allam's success, especially during tough times. His knack for building long-lasting relationships has been a cornerstone of our operations. He even managed to arrange for Paul Taylor from Harvey Norman Commercial to deliver doughnuts to the office for the Allam staff every time he stopped in for a meeting.
But Ray's impact stretches beyond work. For the past 14 years, he's been a tireless fundraiser for Oxfam, hitting the trails in Australia and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for those in need. Ray has also been an avid rower, putting together a team for Corporate Dragon Boat Racing as part of the Sydney Lunar Year Celebrations in past years. It took some arm-twisting, but he convinced his fellow employees to join him on this endeavour.
As Ray prepares for the next chapter of his life, we envision him and his beloved wife, Jo, embarking on new journeys, basking in the joys of retirement, and cherishing precious moments with their grandchildren.
To Ray, we offer our heartfelt thanks for his dedication, generosity, and unwavering spirit. While we'll miss his presence around the office, we take comfort in knowing his legacy will endure.

Recently, we recognised George’s 70th
birthday with a surprise celebration, looking back on the three great decades that George has been a part of the Allam family.
<del>T</del>o celebrate George’s birthday, the Allam team came together on Tuesday 6th
of February at the Redgum Rise estate with a surprise BBQ. Stories were shared from George’s time with the business, with Allam members sharing that he is best known for his generosity, often bringing pomegranates, macadamias and dragon fruit to the site to share with others. One described George as “Your typical generous Greek man.”
Many years ago, George lost his wife, and he was left to raise his children on his own. Throughout those tougher years, George had the support from Allam, forming a tight bond and respect for one another. 
George’s son, Chris, shares that “Allam was extremely supportive during this time. We were allowed to come to the site with Dad when we were young whilst he was looking after us. Allam has always had a people first policy, especially when it came its employees.”
Now with grandchildren (and some anticipated on the way), George is thrilled to show his family his passion of the property development industry and does not see himself stopping anytime soon.

The festive season can be a difficult period for many families. Our goal this year was to find a way to give back to our community and help spread some cheer to those who need it most. Allam Property Group teamed up with Penrith Panthers, and visited Nepean Hospital, to lift the spirits of kids this Christmas, providing gifts and some laughs, to spread the cheer and lift spirits to those who need it the most. 
The kids at Nepean Hospital were visited by five Penrith Panthers players including Nathan Cleary, Tyrone Peachey, and Luke Garner. Armed with several Santa sacks, provided by Allam Property Group, the players travelled bed-to-bed through the Childrens ward and pre-natal ward to brighten the day of sick children and their families. 
This is the second year of Christmas gifting at Nepean Hospital, with Allam Property Group and Penrith Panthers enjoying giving back to their beloved community. 
Allam Property Group Development Director, Adrian Arnaudon, attended this year's visit to support the wonderful day. Adrian says, “At this time of year, some families are doing it tough. As a Panthers long-time sponsor, we are proud to donate Christmas presents for the Panthers team to gift to Children at Nepean Hospital and the Panthers are the best people to put a smile on these kids’ faces for sure. We are pleased to be a part of this initiative for another year.”

After travelling for 2 years, Tess and Pete were looking to settle down and find their village. Monterey sparked some large ideas for them, ones that involved space, greenery and facilities without the upkeep.
“It was about 5 months ago that we came across Monterey on the internet” shared Pete. We had actually been looking for a place to settle into for about 10 years now. We sold our home 3 years ago in the middle of COVID-19 and bought a caravan to travel for 2 years.”
Pete and Tess have spent the last three years travelling; two in a caravan travelling around Australia, and the last year overseas. They always had an over 55s community in their mind, and since coming back to Australia 6 months ago, it was time for Pete and Tess to make the move and settle down.

The 2023 NRL Grand Final game saw Penrith Panthers go head-to-head with the Brisbane Broncos in an incredible match that left all on the edge of their seat. With only four minutes remaining and Panthers down by four, we were pleased to see co-captain Nathan Cleary even up the score, securing the win with the winning kick.
Barney Allam OAM and his immediate family have been a part of the Penrith community for over 50 years, and during that time has supported the Panthers avidly. Their support lives on throughout Allam staff, with whom many are also revelling in their success and are proud of the support our business gives to the team.

Kalina is one of our most treasured estates located in the North West Sydney suburb of The Ponds, adjacent to the Rouse Hill growth corridor. It was originally developed as a co-venture between the Allam Group and Landcom (Urban Growth NSW).

Earlier this year we gathered in the Allam Chairman’s Club at Penrith Panthers Bluebet Stadium, together with our longest standing contractors, suppliers, and trades to celebrate 30 years of business for Allam Property Group.
On the night we handed out awards as a token of our appreciation to the companies we have had long term relationships with for their years of support and even some who have been with us since the beginning.
 
Over the 30 years of business Allam has accomplished so much including building over seven thousand homes, developing several communities, and helping employ thousands of people.
We are thankful to everyone who turned out to help us celebrate this milestone, and the Allam team look forward to what the next 30 years may hold.
